Hraunfell is an abandoned farm in Sunnudalur, which branches inland from Hofsárdalur. The history of this farm is very remarkable. Farming ended on this land about 1950. The previous year a new, concrete cow barn was built. Unfortunately, the animals never used the barn because the next spring was so difficult that the people felt the best choice was to move away.

It takes about 3 hrs. to walk from Síreksstaðir to Hraunfell and back. The path is rather easy, although much of it lies through low growth areas. Beautiful Icelandic wildflowers are along the way, not to mention bird life, peace and clean air. Part of the trail lies along the Sunnudalsár cliffs. The canyon is incredibly beautiful and colorful, and who knows but one may see the occasional salmon fisherman along the banks, angling for salmon.
